There is a growing body of evidence that uterine fibroid embolization (UFE) is an important treatment option in patients with uterine fibroids and desire for pregnancy. This paper highlights some of the advantages of UFE over myomectomy for these patients. In younger patient with fibroids, UFE is a more durable procedure compared to myomectomy. Patients who have had a myomectomy have a higher recurrence rate and reintervention rate compared to UFE. Almost half of patients undergoing UFE we able to have term pregnancies. This rate compares favorably to myomectomy. In addition to being less invasive than myomectomy, UFE allows patients to undergo a vaginal delivery whereas myomectomy patients must have a Cesarean Section.
